As defined by SMI: 'A compression spring is an open
coil helical spring that offers resistance to a compressive force
applied axially.'
Cylindrically coiled springs are the most common compression
springs, but there are many types. Conical, tapered,
concave, convex, or various combinations of these.
Wire types are also quite varied. Material types can be
anything from music wire to titanium to beryllium copper.
Shapes differ from round, ovoid, square, rectangular, and stranded
wire.
There are four basic ends available in compression springs.

detailed description of the ends available for compression
springs.
